What is the Student's Pass?
Full-time international students in Singapore need a Student's Pass (STP), issued by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). It is tied to the institution sponsoring you and valid for the duration of your course. You cannot study full-time on a tourist visit pass.
How the application works
- Get accepted first. You need an offer from an approved institution — an Institute of Higher Learning (like NUS, NTU, or SMU) or an EduTrust-certified private school.
- Your school files via SOLAR+. After you accept your offer, the university submits the STP application through ICA's SOLAR+ e-service.
- Receive your In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter. The IPA is your entry document — you present it at immigration and use it to travel to Singapore.
- Complete formalities in Singapore. Within two weeks of arrival you complete the medical examination (if required) and ICA issues your digital Student's Pass.
Fees
- Processing fee: S$45 (non-refundable)
- Issuance fee: S$60 (≈ US$47)
- Multiple Journey Visa: S$30 — only if an entry visa is required. Most American and Latin American passports are visa-exempt and don't need one.
Processing time
- Public universities (IHL): about 1 week (up to 2 weeks if a visa is required)
- EduTrust-certified private schools: about 2 weeks
- Other private schools: up to 1 month
Financial requirements
ICA requires proof of financial support covering tuition and living costs for at least your first year. There is no published fixed amount, but ~S$20,000–25,000 (≈ US$15,600–19,500) in accessible funds is the commonly cited target. Bank statements, scholarship letters, or sponsor letters all work.
Can you work?
Yes — within limits. Under MOM's Work Pass Exemption, full-time matriculated students at approved institutions can work up to 16 hours per week during term and unlimited hours during vacations. Exchange students may not work.
